Ranked Murray loses to Coric in 3rd round of Madrid Open

Scottish tennis player Andy Murray

World number one Andy Murray is out of the Madrid Open after he lost in straight sets to Borna Coric in the last 16. He withdrew from Barcelona last month because of a right wrist injury.

"I was just making lots of mistakes early in the rallies and trying to end points very quickly at the beginning, and the errors just kept piling up." the 29-year-old told BBC Sport.

"Things can change fast but you need to find exactly what it is that is going wrong and how you're going to fix that and commit to it". I returned really well.

He could now have to repeat something like that eye-watering effort to stay there but it is clear he is still finding his way after his elbow injury.

However, Murray cut a frustrated figure as he was swept aside by the 20-year-old Croatian for the second time in the pair's four meetings. When he failed to convert two break points in the third game he broke out into that manic grin, with Coric having served outstandingly well on the big points.

Things only got worse as Coric held his own serve before breaking again to take the opening set 6-3.

It's not the first time Murray has come unstuck against Coric as a lucky loser, with his defeat to the Croat in Dubai coming in the same circumstances.

The head-to-head record between the two is now tied at 2-2. Murray managed to peg him back before a timely ace rescued the game.

World number 59 Coric, handed a reprieve to enter the draw despite losing in qualifying to Mikhail Kukushkin, will face either Grigor Dimitrov or Dominic Thiem in Friday's quarter-finals.

"I couldn't imagine this when I woke up this morning, I always believed but I wasn't sure how I was going to play, but in the end I played as I had dreamed".

"I didn't help myself find a way into the match to start playing better", said Murray.

Djokovic defeated Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 7-5, while Nadal eased past Nick Kyrgios of Australia 6-3, 6-1.

"I'm feeling really happy obviously".

The other quarterfinal will be played between Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay, who defeated Benoit Paire of France 7-5, 0-6, 6-1, and Alexander Zverev of Germany, who beat Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4.
