Republican health care bill passes House without Fitzpatrick, Boyle votes

The American Health Care Act, which repeals and replaces the Affordable Care Act passed under President Barack Obama, now heads to the Senate where it faces challenges and likely changes.

The house voted 217-213 in favour of the bill, and has brought fears that millions of Americans could be left without adequate healthcare while the cost of treatment and drugs might sky rocket for others.

It's not a stretch to argue that California's Republican congressional delegation pushed the House GOP health care bill over the top. The Obamacare repeal, one of Trump's key campaign promises, would usher in sweeping changes to the USA health care system in the coming years.

The bill is expected to undergo major changes, with some Senate Republicans saying they will not vote on the House-passed bill but will write their own legislation.

Shortly after the bill passed the House, the chairman of the Senate's health committee said the Senate would "finish work on our bill, but will take the time to get it right".

After a decade of being in the political wilderness, House Republicans have realized that they're in charge: President Donald J. Trump runs the White House, and they now control Congress.

His Vermont colleague, Senator Patrick Leahy, said the House of Representatives had advanced a "cruel" and "cynical" bill intended "to give a massive tax cut to the wealthiest Americans, in the guise of a health care plan". While insurers could not deny people insurance because of pre-existing conditions, they would be allowed to charge them as much as they want.

Correspondents' dinner lacks glitter without Trump
Trump is heading to Pennsylvania in the evening to visit a shovel factory and appear at a rally in Harrisburg, the state capital. That seemed to spur him on: "They are gathered together for the White House correspondents' dinner - without the president".

And despite the mainstream media's relentless attempts to trash his presidency, Trump is following through on his campaign promise.

But Rep. Thomas Garrett of Virginia said his "staff" had read all of the parts of the bill - which he plans to vote for.

And it makes sense for subsidies for those pools to come from the taxpayers at large, rather than imposing much higher premiums on the relatively few Americans buying individual policies - if you make sure the subsidies are high enough. Republicans hold a narrow 52-seat majority in the chamber, and they will consider the bill under special budget rules that prevent a filibuster.

The bill faces a hard path in the Senate.

Today, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown tweeted out dozens of pre-existing conditions he said could result in higher premiums under the Republican bill, including acid reflux, acne, depression and high cholesterol.

But the House Freedom Caucus, who helped deliver the killing blow to the original replacement bill, supported the latest version. Another amendment added Wednesday adds an additional $8 billion over five years to the AHCA's $130 billion fund for high-risk pools. He said 2.7 million New Yorkers would be without healthcare coverage with billions of dollars in cuts to the state's Medicaid program.
