Amazon Prime Video app could come to Apple TV after all

But according to a Recode report, Apple and Amazon may be on the verge of putting their differences aside and will bring the Amazon video app to Apple TV this summer.

So far, the two companies haven't been able to reach an agreement to bring an Amazon Video app to the Apple TV.

Amazon employees expect the app to show up on Apple's hardware in the third quarter of the year.

Therefore, the latest development assumed importance as it comes on the heels of Amazon's video unit gaining traction significantly among its Prime members.

That meant the only way to watch Prime video on your Apple TV was to route it through Apple's AirPlay mirroring, and cumbersome and often laggy experience. The standoff led Amazon to stop selling the Apple TV on its retail site in 2015, as Recode notes. Instead of needing multiple devices to watch our favorite shows and videos, we can watch everything through Apple TV, regardless of where it streams from. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said, "We've been able to monitor the people who use Prime Video...they renew [Prime memberships] at higher rates and they convert from free trial at higher rates".

At time of writing this, Amazon shares are trading down 0.45 percent while Apple stock is trading up 1.50 percent. "In-fact, little has really changed with Apple's streamer and the competition has not only got cheaper, but significantly more appealing with 4K content". The two companies are both interested in video and that rivalry has kept Prime Video from taking off on AAPL's devices.

But Bezos did talk a bit about the reason Amazon stopped selling Apple TVs.

But the companies have disagreed on business terms, as Bezos had explained. "And they're going to return it".

Amazon Video, meanwhile, launched back in 2006 as "Amazon Unbox", and eventually turned into Amazon Instant Video on Demand as part of the Prime subscription.

"When we win a Golden Globe", he added, "it helps us sell more shoes".
