Missile attack brings countries to brink of military clash, says Moscow

Coming closer to embracing regime change in Syria, the USA ambassador to the United Nations said that with President Bashar al-Assad in power, Syria will not know peace, CNN reported Sunday.

Rouhani added the US attack was in line with policy to strengthen the terrorists.

The US strikes provoked fury in Moscow, which diverted a warship to the Mediterranean to protect the Syrian coast and vowed to bolster Bashar al-Assad's defences against further US missile strikes.

"Russia could be part of the solution", he said, noting that now they were "part of the problem".

The joint command centre also said the presence of USA troops in northern Syria where Washington has hundreds of special forces helping the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to oust Islamic State was "illegal" and that Washington had a long-term plan to occupy the area.

"Russians should ask themselves: 'What are we doing here?" Russian Federation should ask themselves, ... "Why are we supporting this murderous regime that is committing mass murder of its own population?" The Pentagon said the base was used to store chemical weapons after at least 86 people, including 33 children, were killed in a nerve gas attack in rebel-held Idlib province earlier this week.

Assad saw statements from senior Trump administration officials last week referring to his remaining in power as a "green light" for him to escalate his attacks on civilians, according to Hijab.

The United States is prepared to "do more" if necessary in Syria, US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Sunday.

"If this strike is not followed up by political, military and diplomatic pressure, it will give a chance to Assad to boast they have contained the strike and they have made an achievement", Hijab said at a pre-scheduled Friday morning event at the Atlantic Council. "The fact of destruction of all chemical weapon stockpiles of the Syrian armed forces was recorded and confirmed by the (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons)".

Despite Russia and Iran's condemnation of Thursday's missile strike, many USA allies have expressed support for the move. "The best way President Trump could help the people of Syria would be to immediately abandon his inhumane ban on refugees from Syria and other war-torn countries, as well as his draconian cuts to diplomacy and worldwide aid". He said the U.S. "Russian intelligence may not be as good as ours, but it's good enough to know the Syrians had chemical weapons, were using chemical weapons".

"I think that's what you're going to see this administration do", Haley continued. The Syrian Army has no chemical weapons.

"Using chemical weapons is an atrocity", Democratic Sen.

Their comments came as Tillerson was making the Trump administration's first official trip this week to Russian Federation, a staunch Assad ally.

The full interview is set to air Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union", at 9 a.m. ET. "I think we ought to ask them that question". The gas attack killed dozens and produced images of small children dead on the ground and others gasping for breath as they struggled to survive the effects of the noxious gas.

It's also unclear why gassing civilians drew such a dramatically different response than indiscriminately blowing them up with conventional explosives and the Assad regime's "barrel bombs".

"In no way do we see peace in that area with Assad as the head of the Syrian government", Haley told NBC's "Meet the Press".
