U.S. weighs giving Saudis more military aid for Yemen efforts

Twelve Saudi soldiers killed in Yemen helicopter crash

The US might also provide Coalition forces with logistic support, to involve offering fuel to the Saudi and UAE airplanes and enhance the operations against al-Qaeda in Yemen and the Arabian Peninsula.

A Saudi military Black Hawk helicopter has crashed in Yemen, killing at least 12 military personnel, Saudi's SPA news agency reported on Tuesday.

The coalition gave no details on how the aircraft was brought down. The assistance could involve more intelligence support but won't include a commitment of US ground troops, they said, adding that any moves would reflect the administration's effort to aggressively counter what it sees as Iran's malign influence across the region.

US Defense Secretary James Mattis arrived in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Tuesday for discussions on the Yemen war with Saudi leaders.

The also second deputy prime minister then met with Mattis and US President Donald Trump to discuss issues related to his portfolio, as well as plans to curb what Washington and Riyadh label as growing Iran's regional influence. To that end, Mr Mattis has asked for the lifting of restrictions imposed by that former president Barack Obama on arms sales to the kingdom.

The coalition hopes that a successful operation there would force the rebels back to the negotiating table, in a considerably weaker position and thus more amenable to concessions.

He said the U.S. would "reinforce Saudi Arabia's resistance to Iran's mischief" and suggested the possibility of President Donald Trump visiting Saudi Arabia.

The US official said the goal was for there to be a political solution through UN-brokered negotiations to resolve the conflict in Yemen.
