US, Mexico and Canada to make joint bid for 2026 World Cup

Victor Montagliani, left, President of the Canadian Soccer Association, Sunil Gulati, center, President of the United States Soccer Federation, and Decio de Maria, President of the Mexican Football Federation, show their unified bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup, Monday, April 10, 2017, in NY.

Speaking at the event, held at the One World Observatory inside Manhattan's One World Trade Center, Gulati said the initial proposal calls for the U.S., which had originally considered bidding alone, to stage 60 games in the newly expanded 48-country, 80-game tournament, with Canada and Mexico hosting ten games each.

As the 2018 and 2022 World Cup were allotted to Russian Federation and Qatar, no Asian and European countries were allowed to bid.

The announcement was made Monday afternoon in a press conference hosted by the federations of the three countries at One World Observatory in NY.

"Canada has already proven itself as a formidable host for the world's game, setting FIFA records for attendance at the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship in 2002, the men's FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007, and the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015™", said Victor Montagliani, president of Canada Soccer and CONCACAF.

With an expanded field, perhaps only the United States, with a plethora of state-of-the-art stadiums and hotel accommodations, could handle a 48-team event. In an unprecedented investment, Qatar is projected to spend more than $200 billion for the 2022 World Cup.

"Like I said earlier, there will be a (World Cup) champion, but the real winners are soccer and the region to have invited the world to enjoy this celebration". Canada has never hosted the World Cup.

There hasn't been a men's World Cup in the CONCACAF region (North America, Central American, and the Caribbean) since 1994, when the USA hosted alone.

"We have the full support of the U.S. government in this project", Gulati said.

"The key principles", Gulati said of coming to agreement, "was we felt we should host a lion's share of games, and if we went alone, potentially had the strongest bid".

Federation Internationale de Football Association bidding rules have made the North American bid a strong favorite to win because Europe and Asia can not present a candidate.

The FIFA Council agreed in January to expand the current the 32-country tournament to 48 teams split into 16 groups of three.

Federation Internationale de Football Association plans to host a 48-team tournament from 2026 onwards but that still has to be fully ratified in Bahrain in the next Federation Internationale de Football Association congress on May 11.

It looks like the USA and CONCACAF know it. "This will be an extraordinarily successful World Cup on financial and economic grounds, and that's critical because most of FIFA's revenues come from one event". "Now we're saying hello to the 2026 World Cup".

"The general parameters of this bid are a World Cup of 80 games". "The President of the United States is fully supportive and encouraged us to have this joint bid". The final phase will take place in May 2020, before the next U.S. President elections.
