Trump urges former adviser Flynn to cut immunity deal

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn right has told investigators that he’s willing to be interviewed in return for immunity from prosecution a position Trump tweeted support for on Friday

"He thinks that he should go up there and do what he has to do to get the story out".

A wide-ranging grant of immunity could protect him from any potential future charges from the Justice Department, which would play a key role in any such negotiations if it were to be seriously considered.

Asked whether it was appropriate for Mr Flynn to seek immunity - something both Mr Trump and Mr Flynn had previously suggested was evidence of criminal behaviour - he said: "That is up to him and his lawyer".

A senior congressional official with direct knowledge said Flynn's lawyer was told it was "wildly preliminary" and that immunity was "not on the table" at the moment.

Rep. Adam Schiff says that Michael Flynn even discussing possible immunity in exchange for protection from prosecution is a "grave and momentous" step because of the seniority of his former position.

Q: If a witness seeks immunity, doesn't that mean he or she is probably guilty of a crime?

Senator Angus King, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, also said it was too soon to discuss immunity.

Trump's attorney, Robert Kelner, said Thursday night that "no reasonable person" would agree to be questioned "in such a highly politicized, witch hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution".

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., top Democrat on the House intelligence panel, on Friday called the idea a "grave and momentous step", and one that apparently can not be considered quite yet.

Mr Flynn has reportedly offered to cooperate with FBI investigators and two Congressional committees in return for immunity from prosecution, as they probe Russia's alleged cyber-meddling in the 2016 election, and possible links between Moscow and Mr Trump's campaign team.

The former adviser, Michael Flynn, told investigators he would submit himself to be interviewed in exchange for immunity from prosecution, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

"He believes that Mike Flynn should go testify", Spicer said during Friday's briefing.

Prior to Trump's inauguration, on the day that President Obama announced sanctions against Russia as punishment for interfering in the US election, Flynn spoke on the phone with Russian Ambassador Kislyak.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes says he's learned some Trump team communications were incidentally collected during the transition - information he apparently found out with help from White House aides, a detail that has only fueled Democratic complaints. "The discussions did not include immunity or other possible conditions for his appearance".

"While I can not discuss the content of the documents", Schiff said, "if the White House had any concern over these materials, they should have been shared with the full (House and Senate intelligence) committees in the first place as a part of our ordinary oversight responsibilities". That businessman, Ekim Alptekin, has told The Associated Press that the registration was made under pressure from the Justice Department.

Trump would not comment further when asked about Flynn during a White House meeting with USA manufacturers.

He and his firm also recently registered with the Justice Department as foreign agents for lobbying work conducted on behalf of a company owned by a Turkish businessman.

Flynn resigned from his position February 13 after acknowledging that he did not properly brief the then-vice president elect about a phone conversation he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Law enforcement officials told CNN Friday there is no indication the Federal Bureau of Investigation is interested in talking to Flynn again or giving him any kind of immunity.
