US House also votes to repeal broadband privacy rules

Privacy advocates haven't given up the fight after the U.S. Congress voted to allow ISPs to sell customers' browsing histories and other personal information without their permission.

Voting 215-205, the House repealed the measure that would have prevented Internet Service Providers from marketing customers' web browsing history and other personal information.

The Trump-appointed chairman of the FCC, Ajit Pai, a critic of the broadband privacy rules said they could discourage new investments.

Senate Joint Resolution 34 passed the House by a vote of 215-205 on Tuesday, which seeks to eliminate landmark privacy protections enacted a year ago by the Federal Communications Commission under former President Barack Obama.

"Make no mistake, by a vote of 215 to 205 a slim majority of the House of Representatives have chose to give our personal information to an already highly profitable cable and telephone industry so that they can increase their profits with our data".

Naturally, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi opposed the resolution and warned of its potential consequences: "Our broadband providers know deeply personal information about us and our families".

Rep. Michael C. Burgess, a Texas Republican, said the FCC rules were "promulgated by bureaucrats who remain unaccountable to the American people". The counterargument to this has been that when it comes to websites such as Facebook and Google, users have a choice about whether to use them or not - with ISPs, this is not necessarily the case.

Democrats blasted Republicans for betraying the privacy rights of consumers. Experts say federal law still requires broadband providers to protect customer information - but it doesn't spell out how or what companies must do. That's why we need the FCC's privacy rules: "ISPs are in a position of power, and they've shown they're willing to abuse that power". Congress' approval is a loss for privacy advocates, who fought for the regulation, passed in October of previous year by the then-Democratic majority on the Federal Communications Commission. "Without these rules, everyone who uses broadband will face increased risks to their sensitive information-including financial data and information about their children".

She says the loss of protections will help fill the pockets of companies like Verizon and Comcast.

"If S J Res 34 were presented to the president, his advisers would recommend that he sign the bill into law", the Trump regime said.

"Internet providers [ISPs] will continue to work on innovative new products that follow "privacy-by-design" principles and honor the FTC's successful consumer protection framework", the Internet and Television Association said in a statement Tuesday, arguing that ISPs have a proven record of safeguarding consumer privacy. "It really doesn't go to, what's the best rule, what's the most effective rule".
