ISRO world record in 104-satellite launches on a single flight

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on 15 February 2017 successfully launched a record 104 satellites including Cartosat-2 in a single mission.

The rocket - India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), also known as Cartosat-2 -is a four-stage rocket that India has used for a variety of missions since 1993.

The lift-off took place as scheduled at 9.28 am from the First Launch Pad (FLP) of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, about 80 km from Chennai in near flawless conditions.

The rocket was launched at 9:28 a.m. (0358 UTC), releasing all 104 satellites into orbit about 30 minutes later. Of the 101 co-passenger satellites, 96 were from the US, while five belonged to the Netherlands, Switzerland, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan. The PSLV-C37 included the Cartosat-2 series, 101 global nano satellites, as well as the INS-1A and INS-1B - two of its ISRO's nano satellites. Within a time span of 11 minutes, all the 104 satellites were detached from the PSLV rocket and the mission was declared as a huge success in the history of space exploration.

The highly anticipated mission was closely followed by scientists and space mission enthusiasts in different countries.

Israel's science ministry said on Wednesday that two Israeli nanosatellites were launched from India, amidst a record launching of 104 satellites on a single mission.

The "Dove" satellites will be used to image the earth at low cost.

Prior to this mission, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle has placed 122 satellites in orbit over the past 23 years.

All US satellites are from the earth observation company Planet, which was formed by former NASA scientists in 2010.

The USA had launched 29 satellites in one go in 2013, while in June 2015, ISRO had launched 20 satellites in one go. Currently, ISRO has massive expectations that it could soon recover at least half of the total expenditure through their payments from the customers of foreign countries after the successful launch on Wednesday.
