North Korea releases missile launch footage

North Korea releases missile launch footage

A USA official said the missile tested traveled 500 kilometers (310 miles) before landing in the Sea of Japan and that it was launched from North Pyongan province.

North Korea on Sunday staged its first ballistic missile test since Donald Trump took office, a move denounced by Japan's leader who won "100 percent" backing from the new US President.

The United States, Japan and South Korea have requested urgent United Nations Security Council consultations on North Korea's launch of a ballistic missile on Sunday.

The young leader is planning a "prime time" nuclear weapons push this year to take advantage of a leadership transition in South Korea - where the president has been impeached - and the United States, a high-ranking North Korean defector said recently.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose country would be in range of a hostile North Korean missile launch, called the test "absolutely intolerable" during an impromptu press conference with Trump in Florida.

The missile North Korea tested early Sunday morning under the direct supervision of Kim Jong-un was a new medium-to-long-range missile that the North refers to as Pukguksong-2.

The launch, the military believed, was aimed at drawing attention by showing off its nuclear and missile capability and was also part of armed protest against the Trump administration's hard-line stance toward the DPRK.

This latest North Korean test would, according to analysts, help South Korea further justify its plans for the new missile shield.

She is being cared for in close proximity to mom and dad, Henry, so they can hear and smell each other, zoo officials said. The zoo also reported on Facebook that the hippo is up to 37 lbs and has been eating more than she ever has before.

The military in Seoul said that the missile flew about 500 kilometres.

In previous Security Council actions on North Korea, the United States and China, a neighbor and ally of Pyongyang, have been the key negotiators.

In a statement, the spokesman for the United Nations secretary-general condemned the missile launch, saying North Korea's action "is a further troubling violation of Security Council resolutions". The missile was launched near the northwestern city of Kusong and splashed into the Sea of Japan.

Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said North Korean claims about the missile's engine were "a very concerning development".

North Korea's claim couldn't be independently confirmed, but Lee said video and photos of the launch appear to show that the missile used solid fuel. But he did not specifically outline what he would do to punish North Korea. The country has also stated that the root cause of the persistence of the program is not their fault, but that of tense relations with the US and South Korea.

Japan's top government spokesman, Yoshihide Suge, said the test was "clearly a provocation to Japan and the region".

The United States, Japan and South Korea called for U.N. Security Council consultations, a USA official told NBC News on Sunday.

Bader says it's not clear what Trump's national security adviser meant by that statement "except that it was meant to be scary to the Iranians".
