Traverse City Educators React to Betsy DeVos' Secretary of Educa

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary after Vice President Mike Pence breaks 50-50 tie. "Education is a foundational concept for our democracy, our communities, our economy and really the future of the United States, and my hope is that she can work more toward MA in terms of how to have really strong public schools and access to them for all students".

Fulton says, "She is just not qualified to be the leader of a very, very large institution as Secretary of Education".

In the weeks since, outraged constituents flooded Senate offices with phone calls, Democrats held the Senate floor all night long before Tuesday's vote to reiterate their reasons for opposing DeVos, and two Republicans senators, Susan Collins from ME and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska, joined all the Senate Democrats and Independents to vote no on DeVos' confirmation, making the final vote 50 to 50.

Betsy DeVos, a wealthy Republican donor and longtime school choice advocate, has emerged as one of Trump's most controversial Cabinet picks. Her gross lack of experience was brought to light most recently by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, who put DeVos knowledge to the test during the nationally-televised confirmation hearings in January.

"Betsy DeVos is unqualified to be Secretary of Education".

At her confirmation hearing January 7, DeVos struggled to answer several questions about education practices.

Despite the efforts of the Democrats, they failed to convince a third Republican to kill the nomination, according to Buzzfeed, and that paved the way for Pence to make the deciding vote.

After DeVos' confirmation, the Senate moved to vote on Sen.

The vote is expected to take place later in the day on Tuesday.
