Russia Rejects Trump's Charge That Iran Is Top Terrorist State

Meeting with military commanders, Khamenei said Trump's attempt to impose a travel ban against Iran and six other predominantly Muslim countries showed "the reality of American human rights".

The exchange marks the first major disagreement between President Vladimir Putin and the new Trump administration, even as both sides say they are ready to work together to fight Islamic State.

He added that the Iranian people "are not afraid of any threat".

"Russian Federation disagrees with President Trump's statement that Iran is the number one terror state", added Presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov.

The aerial image was taken on the same day the White House sanctioned 13 Iranian nationals and 12 companies with ties to the country's missile program.

Dina Esfandiary, a fellow at the Centre for Science and Security Studies at London's King's College, told to Bloomberg News that Trump is playing into Khamenei's previous statements that Americans should not be trusted.

In his daily press briefing Tuesday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Trump would not remain idle in response to Iran's "violations, or apparent violations", of its 2015 nuclear deal with the USA and five other world powers.

North Korea is believed to have restarted operation of a reactor at its main Yongbyon nuclear facility that produces plutonium for its nuclear weapons programme.

The speech on Tuesday came in preparation for the celebration of the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran later this week. The White House said the missile launch was not a direct breach of the nuclear deal but "violates the spirit of that".

The comments came after Trump responded to a January 29 Iranian missile test by saying "Iran is playing with fire" and imposed fresh sanctions on individuals and entities.

"That's the reason why the president took the decisive action that he took to impose economic sanctions on their supply chain for their missile programme", he said.

Khamenei's mocking positive spin can't hide the fact that U.S. -Iran relations are reverting back to the days of hostile confrontation before the 2015 nuclear deal.

Khamenei also thanked Trump for exposing the apparent hypocrisy of the United States and criticized him for his domestic immigration ban after mocking him for his predecessor Barrack Obama's interventions in the middle east.

Iran has conducted such tests a few times a year, usually with a token response from the United States complaining about them.
