Australia 'disappointed' by Japanese whaling

A slaughtered minke whale was found on a Japanese ship in the Antarctic in an act being perceived as a defiance of an worldwide court ruling against the country's whaling activities, activist group Sea Shepherd said Sunday.

The conservationist organization released the damning photographs of a dead minke whale Sunday and said the vessel's crew attempted to cover the carcass when they noticed the group's helicopter overhead.

And to make matters worse, there's nothing humane about how these whalers kill their whales.

Sea Shepherd activists say the whale was quickly covered with a tarp.

Sea Shepherd said it was the first minke slaughter to be documented since the ICJ ruling.

Whale hunting in the Southern Ocean has created tension between Australia and Japan.

The International Court of Justice ruled against Japan's whaling operations in the Southern Ocean in 2014.

"When they were in opposition, the government said there was blood in the water and a blind eye in Canberra".

The news came only a day after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Australia to meet his counterpart, Malcolm Turnbull, for talks focusing on trade and defense.

Sea Shepherd has tweeted a picture of a slaughtered whale lying on board Nisshin Maru.

The Japanese and Australian leaders made no public statement about whaling and whether or not they discussed the issue is not known.

"The Australian people want action, and in the absence of that they're left with Sea Shepherd but it shouldn't be left up to us", he said.

Jeff Hansen, the managing director of Sea Shepherd Australia, said a "lack of action by the Turnbull government" in response to the killing of whales in Australian waters on the tail of a state visit from Abe showed "the government has no spine when it comes to protecting the wishes of Australians to defend the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary".

This is despite the 2014 International Court of Justice ruling that Japan's Southern Ocean whaling program was illegal and must stop.

Josh Frydenberg, who holds the environment portfolio, said the government was "deeply disappointed" Japan had resumed whaling.

"Australia is opposed to all forms of commercial and so-called "scientific" whaling", he said, as cited by the Guardian.

Japan started what it calls "scientific whaling" in 1987, a year after an worldwide whaling moratorium took effect. Japan has reportedly hunted more than 8,200 minke whales in the Antarctic since 1986 despite an global freeze on commercial whaling - claiming that it is whaling for "scientific research".
