President-elect Donald Trump's transition historically unpopular

A majority of Americans disapproved of the way Donald Trump is handling his transition, according to a Gallup poll that said the incoming president was at a historically low level in advance of the January 20 inauguration.

President Barack Obama, confirmed virtual reality fan, is giving the White House a proper sendoff with the launch of another collaboration with Oculus and Félix & Paul Studios.

Just 44 percent of Americans approve of his incoming administration, compared with 51 percent who disapprove, the survey found. That's a drop of four percentage points from the 48 percent of people that approved of the president-elect in early December.

Republicans and Democrats had differing views of how Mr. Trump has handled the transition, with 87 percent of Republicans saying they approved. Even George W. Bush, just days after the divisive 2000 Florida recount ended, polled well above his margin of victory over Al Gore on the question of handling the transition, with 61 percent of Americans rating his transition period favorably just prior to his inauguration in 2001.

Obama leaves office with a 55 percent approval rating, much higher than the one that Trump enters office with.

Trump's cabinet picks have also generated mixed opinions, with 52% describing them as "average" or better and 32% calling them "outstanding" or "above average". Roughly 44 percent of those polled called the potential cabinet members below average or poor.

Gallup asked Americans to predict Obama's legacy, along with retrospective evaluations of 11 prior presidents back to Dwight Eisenhower.

The poll, which surveyed more than 1,000 adults nationwide via telephone from January 4 to 8, has a major of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
