Tunisia arrests nephew of Berlin market attacker Anis Amri

Tunisia has arrested the nephew of Anis Amri, the Berlin attack suspect, and two others linked to him, according to the North African nation's interior ministry.

Twenty-four-year-old Anis Amri, who had claimed asylum in Germany but who had his case rejected, ploughed a truck into revelers at a Christmas market in an upscale Berlin neighborhood on Monday, killing 12 people and wounded almost 50 others.

"Without any doubt the person killed is Anis Amri, the man suspected in the Berlin terrorist attack", he added.

Investigators said the men, who were not named, are between the ages of 18 and 27 and members of a "terrorist cell" Amri's nephew said they communicated via the Telegram app to avoid surveillance.

The Tunisian prosecutor's office has ordered all three men held in pre-trial detention pending further investigation.

Amri was killed Friday in a shootout with police in Milan after being on the run from the attack in Berlin on Monday.

Amri had no ID or phone, carrying only a pocketknife and the.22-caliber pistol he used to shoot Movio, police said.

A spokesman for the Berlin police said Saturday that there would be an increased presence of uniformed and plainclothes officers on the city's streets over the Christmas holidays.

After fleeing from Germany and through France, he was shot dead by Italian police in Milan on Friday.

German security agencies began monitoring Amri in March, suspecting that he was planning break-ins to raise cash for automatic weapons to carry out an attack.

At a news conference on Friday afternoon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel assured that the direct threat is now over but the terrorist threat is still there. Milan police said Amri had a few hundred euros on him but no telephone.

Amri originally came to Europe in 2011, landing with other migrants on the island of Lampedusa, and spent four years in an Italian jail for trying to set a school on fire in Sicily. The decision was made on the recommendation of the police after the attack in Berlin.
