Intel to provide computing power for Delphi autonomous cars

Intel scores Delphi Automotive deal

Autonomous cars are so significant to Intel that the company on Tuesday said it is establishing the Automated Driving Group, which will focus on developing hardware and software technology for self-driving vehicles.

Intel, Delphi and Mobileye hope to bring their autonomous driving system to a variety of cars and trucks within the next two years.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich envisions automated cars and formed Automated Driving Group (ADG) for this project. Kathy Winter from Delphi will work under Davis, handling day-to-day operations and will act as the VP and GM of the new group. There are plans to shift the platform to a more powerful processor that the chipmaker is now working on.

Semiconductor companies like Intel, Qualcomm and Nvidia have set their sights on what many expect to be one of strongest segments of the tech hardware economy for the next decade. ADG will be creating the next generation of driver assist systems and other solutions needed for autonomous vehicles. Among them, worth of mentioning is a venture with Israeli startup Mobileye and German automaker BMW to produce self-driving cars for city streets.

"Three factors will separate the leader from the pack in the race to offer driverless vehicles by 2019 - best-in-class perception sensors such as cameras, radar and LiDAR, automotive experience and computer processing speed", said Glen De Vos, vice president of services for Delphi. Intel will make the chips and provide an additional 12 teraflops of data as backup for today's cars that have morphed into computers on wheels.

ADG's formation comes after Intel announced earlier this month that it plans to invest more than $250 million over the next two years in autonomous driving, in case you had any question how serious it is about all this.

Intel has been competing in the self-driving and connected-car industry for some time - it expects to rake in $1 billion by 2020 in deals providing chips and software to dozens of auto brands - but by carving out a separate self-driving vehicle group, Intel is signaling a greater commitment to the industry.

Ron Medford, director of safety for Google, said "Look back 100 years at when we made the transition from horses to cars". Intel also has acquired companies in the market, including Yogitech, Arynga and Itseez.
