Not Big Brother, India is Elder Brother of Nepal,Says Sushma

Relief came as Prime Minister K.P. Oli visited India, where he met Indian counterpart Narendra Modi and cleared up differences over Nepal's adoption of its first post-monarchy constitution last September. Oli thanked Modi for providing spontaneous support to Nepal after the natural disaster in April a year ago that killed almost 9,000 people and destroyed property worth crores.

The recent controversy emerged with the mention of the Lipu-Lekh Pass in the joint statement issued during the Indian prime minister's visit to China in May 2015. The Madhesis thought they had received less than expected political representation. His trip has the overarching objective of restoring ties between Nepal and India, two neighbors and historic partners that have drifted apart over the past year due to a political crisis stemming from Nepal's new constitution, which was promulgated last year.

The Prime MInister and the Nepalese staff witnessed an audio-visible presentation of how Kutch was put collectively brick-by-brick from a close to-unimaginable state to the spick and span image it presents at present.

Referring to India nudging Nepal to address concerns of sections of its people concerning the Constitution, Oli said: "The government of Nepal and people of Nepal are ready to address the genuine concerns and we understand the sensitivities of our neighbours". But since the formation of Nepal's new constituent assembly in 2008, calls have intensified within the country to scrap the bilateral treaty.

When essential supplies from India were hit by the Madhesi agitation, Nepal was reportedly exploring the option of getting petroleum products and other supplies from China. "It proves that the Constitution is dynamic, can be changed, amended according to demands", he said.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is also ICWA vice president, described India-Nepal relations as historic and characterised by emotional bonds rather than geographical proximity. But its success depends on consensus and dialogue. He arrived in New Delhi last Friday and held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.
